AOL Human Genetics

Human Genome Program

This big, fascinating site is the place to find out all about the U.S. government's ambitious 15-year effort to characterize all the human genetic material -- i.e. the genome -- with the ultimate (rather scary) goal of determining the complete sequence of the DNA subunits in the human genome.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Human Genome Center

The HGC is oriented almost exclusively towards developing and implementing directed methodologies for cost-effective and accurate high throughput human DNA sequencing. Find out more about their research here at the California site.

National Human Genome Project

Dive into the gene pool. Skads of data about the U.S. Human Genome Project based at the Department of Energy Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Newsletters, educational materials, events and extensive bibliography. For professional use only.

Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Center

A searchable, well-organized and thorough site for a major research institute affiliated with the Houston university's medical center. Includes links to databases and a periodic newsletter covering recent Genome Center events.

Généthon - Human Genome Research Centre

Keen on genes... This French center presents its projects: The Genetic Map; Map of Transcripts (ESTs); The Bank; a Collection of Families with Genetic Diseases; and Searching for Genes. You can also consult the Informations Scientifiques ( Scientific Bulletin ) of AFM. In French & English.

Human Genome Newsletter

This newsletter for genome researchers and for those interested in learning more about the Human Genome Project is prepared at the Oak Ridge, Tennessee laboratory. It is sponsored by the DOE and NIH. Current and back issues stored in Gopher format.

The National Center for Genome Research

As companies patent our DNA, this center is trying to map the genetic structure of the human body. Check out what it's up to, its databases, its goals, labs, and archives here.

National Center for Genome Resources

This nonprofit organization was created to control the massive flow of information created by the Human Genome Project, a U.S. government-started project to map the 50,000 to 100,000 genes contained in human DNA. This site includes a genome sequence database and explorations of legal, ethical and social issues in biotechnology.

UK Medical Research Center Human Genome Mapping Project Resource Centre

Highly specialized site serving up resources for scientists working on the Human Genome Project. Includes biological materials, online access to genome databases, and links to analysis tools and training courses. Any individual or organization with an interest in human genome mapping and sequencing can apply, but it's a registration- and password-based service.

1994 Report of the Committee on Human Mitochondrial DNA

Written by scientists in the U.S., Finland, and Italy, this most likely will interest only those doing work in and around this field as it is very technical in nature, though there are maps and figures.

Candida Albicans Information

Chromosomes, DNA, blood samples? No, it's not the O.J. trial. The University of Minnesota project is part of the effort to build a map of the chromosomes, with this excellent site being used to distribute data to the Candida research community. Reviews, news, resources, specs, and so on.

Center for Genetics in Medicine, Washington University

Home to, among other things, the GESTEC project for mapping the X chromosome for pilot sequencing and diallelic markers. Mine their specialized data on screening and sequences, then follow their links to other human genomic sites.

Cooperative Human Linkage Center

We learn here that this research outfit affiliated with the University of Iowa works to develop statistically rigorous genetic maps of the human genome that are enriched for the presence of easy-to-use PCR-formatted microsatellite markers.

Council for Responsible Genetics

The H.G. Wells' character Dr. Moreau (who created evil beasties) would certainly not have belonged to this nonprofit in Washington, D.C. Over 1,000 members are worried about where it will all end.

GenBank

GenBank databank is maintained and distributed from NCBI at the National Library of Medicine and this one is at the University of Indiana and it's updated weekly. There are html & gopher searches available.

Genetic Linkage Web Server

Columbia University and New York Psychiatric Institute offer info on their human genetic linkage newsletter, analysis course, software, an FTP site, members, and publications.

Genome DataBase

A prototype database (last updated in January 1996) of gene families in the human and mouse that contains both community contributed info and hypertext links to various biological databases. It's supported in part by the (U.S.'s) National Institutes of Health, the National Center for Human Genome Research, and the U.S. Dept. of Energy.

GenomeNet

Can't tell a boy chromosome from a girl? You can get that information from this sophisticated but highly technical gateway page to a Japanese computer network for genome research.

HUM-MOLGEN

A moderated, interactive communication and information listserver in human genetics. More than 2,000 subscribers and 10,000 Web users from 50 countries participate in this forum. Bioscience news, publications, conference info as well as a job board are here.

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab Human Genome Center

This lab is oriented toward the development and implementation of methodologies for cost-effective and accurate high throughput human DNA sequencing. They have an elaborate and thorough five-sequence process that you can explore in detail.

Somatix Therapy Corporation

Gene therapy is the mission of this Northern California company. Their page includes science and research links plus that ever-important info page for prospective and current investors.

UCSD Gene Therapy

UC San Diego's gene therapy program is comprised of four main components: Clinical application, vector development, vector production and quality assurance. The program has the capability of developing gene therapy projects from the point of product conception all the way into the clinic and contract manufacturing is actively solicted.
